Shipping cost from China to Saudi Arabia: what decides the price

Sea or air

Sea freight costs a fraction of air per kilo but takes weeks; air takes days. For heavy or bulky goods sea almost always wins. For small, urgent or high-value items air can be cheaper overall once you count the time your money is tied up.

Volume and weight

• LCL sea freight is priced per cubic metre (CBM), with a minimum charge
• A full container has a fixed price: 20' holds about 28 CBM, 40' about 58 CBM and 40'HC about 68 CBM
• Air freight is charged on chargeable weight: the greater of actual weight and volume weight (1 CBM = 167 kg)

Good packing that removes empty space lowers both CBM and chargeable weight.

Timing and route

Rates move with the season. Prices rise before Chinese New Year, during the peak season and when capacity is tight. The origin port matters too: southern China ports often have the most frequent sailings to Jeddah and Dammam.

Costs after arrival

• Customs duty on the CIF value, depending on the HS code
• VAT at 15% on the value including duty
• SABER, SFDA or ministry certificates where required
• Port charges, clearance fees and delivery to your address
